Hidden

We have had some pleasant sunny days this past week in the southwest of England so this morning I went out into the garden to see the state of things after the bad weather we had earlier during the winter.  Some things I can still manage to do in the garden - things that don't need much strength and the other things I leave for the gardener - a very nice man who comes twice a month to help me with the heavy things I can no longer do.

Looking around this morning I was pleasantly surprised by something I hadn't noticed before.  There is a bush that has lovely variegated green leaves.  But what I saw this morning that I hadn't noticed before was a different colour that caught my eye.  When I looked more closely I saw a bunch of lovely red berries, partly hidden by the leaves.  It brought a smile to my face.

I like it when God catches our eye with the unexpected.  And how often does He use the hidden things rather than the big and showy things.  We tend to look to the big congregations, the well-known preacher or worship leader when often God wants to catch our attention with the hidden and unexpected.  He is not necessarily in the wind or the fire or the showy and spectacular but in the still small voice.  Expect to find God in the hidden, seemingly insignificant place today.

Escondido

Me hizo sonreír.

What others think of me

I have seen a few cartoon-like entries on Facebook lately about what friends, parents, employers etc think of 'me' and how they see 'me' and 'my work'. It ends with how 'I' see 'myself' and what 'I'm' really like. I'm sure you've seen them too.

They always make me smile but apart from being a joke they actually do convey what a lot of people really do think and how they see others. Some are favourable and some not so favourable but all seem to be different. The really interesting thing is our own opinion of ourselves.

It reminded of the words of Jesus when he asked the disciples. 'Who do men say is the Son of Man?' and then asked 'And who do you say that I am?' Their answers show quite a difference of opinion reflecting how they knew Jesus differently. Everyone, it seems has a valid opinion but this is usually weighed and swayed by their culture, their surroundings, their relationship to us and coloured by many built-in, though maybe unconscious, prejudices and leanings

Although we often put a lot of store in what others think of us, and some of us can become upset or even offended at the opinion of others, in the end it is reassuring to know that God knows the real me, even better than I know myself.

Sad News

This morning we woke to the sad news of the passing of the singer Whitney Houston. I always feel so sad whenever I hear of anyone who has lost their struggle against addiction. Maybe it's because of personal experience with a close family member (addicted to alcohol not drugs) and knowing how these situations can lead to such pain, not only for the addict but for family and friends too. And so this morning this news brought back painful memories and stirred emotions deep inside.

Many look on addiction along with other unsociable behaviour and habits and in a way we console ourselves with the fact that 'we live in a fallen world' and that 'people make their own choices in life'. I know that is true and I know by heart the many Bible verses that we quote at such times. Yet deep inside, something cries out 'Why, God?' 'Why, after 2000 years have we not managed to change the world?'

I know there are many who work amongst the homeless, the addicts and all others living in the margins of society and they do a great work but sometimes it seems that we are fighting a losing battle. I don't have a magic wand or the answers to my questions. Neither do I sit in judgement or condemn. Today my heart is just crying as I lament before God for the lost.

Noticia triste

Gandhi

I recently watched again the film about the life of Gandhi.  It always leaves me with questions - about myself and the way I think and live and also about Christianity and my own nation's history.

His life's work was to oppose injustice and poverty - surely things that the Body of Christ should be involved in.  He wasn't just involved - he was totally sold out to changing society and it's attitudes to the 'underclass'.  How often are we concerned but then soon sit back into our comfortable lifestyle bemoaning that we can't really do much?  What can I do?  How can I make a difference where I am?

One of his well-known sayings is ‘An eye for an eye only makes the whole world blind.'  We often quote this verse about an eye for an eye, sometimes erroneously justifying our stance against something, but really as Christians this is Old Testament teaching and Jesus continued to say ... ... 'but I say unto you - do not resist an evil person.  If someone strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also ... ... ‘Gandhi even quotes this verse to his followers insisting that they should oppose but without violence or retaliation.  Another quote of his is 'When I despair, I remember that all through history, the way of truth and love has always won.  There have been tyrants and murderers and for a time they can seem invincible but in the end they always fall.'

For me, he lived like Jesus, obeying His commands.  Yet he was a Hindu.  When I think of how the British hierarchy in India at that time massacred defenseless Indians because they were opposing unjust laws, demanding that they pay rent to their landlord (the British) when they had no money to pay because British cloth had flooded the market wiping out the local trade, and compare those acts of imposing sovereignty to Gandhi’s response, I can't help wondering who God would look upon as Christian and following Jesus's teaching.  Most people are brought up in the religious tradition of their ancestors and much of our religious leanings are therefore family and nationally orientated.  But God looks on the heart.  After all the whole world is His.

¿Quién soy?

Suena el teléfono. 'Ché, ¿qué pasa? ¿Qué estás haciendo?
'Estoy trabajando'

The Real Me

I came across this cartoon and it made me smile.  It reminded me of a conversation I had the other day when I pointed out to someone that what they said or maybe their attitude could have been misconstrued.  It is so easy for us to know what we think and believe but sometimes the way we put that across is not always clear and so people very often get the wrong message of what we are really saying.

Also I think that sometimes our opinion of ourselves is not what others see in us.

Another picture to make you smile.  It depends on who is looking and what their own opinions are.  Maybe we don't think that we are awesome but the way we walk, talk, look can give a wrong impression.  So often how we see ourselves is not how others see us.  Sometimes this can be because they are not accurately informed or maybe they just have certain prejudices without actually being aware of them. (as in the first photo)

This seems to be the best policy as we can't please everybody all the time.  The trouble is that so much of our lives seems to be taken up with trying to do just that.

¡Tantas ramas viejas y muertas!

De-cluttering

The other day, the man who helps me with the garden came to prune some trees.  They had got very large and were getting a bit out of hand and wild.  I didn’t want to get rid of them because in the spring time they are full of lovely blossom.  So he brought his chain-saw and very long, strong ladders and cut away the old, dead branches that had outlived their use and were no longer producing the flowers they ought to.
Cutting to leave space for new growth

Much of the parts that he cut away were actually impeding new growth and crossing over and twisting around other branches that would eventually have become tangled and not branching straight outwards in the way they should.  After he had finished, it was surprising to see just how much he had cut away and yet the tree still looked big, strong and healthy.  Now, however it had more room to grow properly and produce the beautiful blossom that we can all enjoy.
So much dead wood!

A friend commented that when she was putting away the gifts she and her family had received over the Christmas time she realised that they had so much stuff, it was time to de-clutter.  How easy it is to hang on to all the stuff we have, even when it no longer serves its purpose and often means that we have little room for anything new.  The important lesson of life is not to hold on to the things that are past that are no longer useful for purpose but rather cut away and get rid of it in order to allow new things to happen.  Easier said than done!  But a valuable lesson all the same.

Cambios

¿Qué voy a hacer?

Changes

A couple of weeks ago a niece in Argentina asked me if I had any photos of her deceased mother and father, Gladys and Adamo.  She particularly asked if I could email her copies of when Gladys visited us here in England.  No problem!  I clicked into My Pictures Library and started looking through all the photos.  I managed to get ones that I had taken when Diego and I visited in 2004 for their golden wedding anniversary celebrations and also in 2007 when she was taken into hospital shortly before she died.  I searched on my computer for some from her visit to us but to no avail.
Diego, me, Gladys and Adamo on a day out at a ranch in 2004

Then of course it dawned on me - that was before I had a digital camera or a computer!  I took a number of rolls of film during her month long stay with us and had the photos but of course no memory card, stick or disc with them on - only rolls of film.  When I reckoned back, it was 17 years ago when she came to England returning to her home in Argentina on 4th January 1995.   How time goes quickly!

Those memories are still fresh in the mind but the technology has moved on so much.  I guess there are teenagers today who have never seen the sort of roll of film we used to use in order to take photos.  Indeed it seems that cameras are often not used either as many people just use their phone.  From one year to the next, new gadgets appear that make last year’s model undesirable.  It makes me feel I'm always playing catch-up and when I seem to have caught up, the world has moved onto to some other superior gadget.  This year you will be able to buy televisions in 3D.  Ah well, you live and learn.

Me quedé parada y sonreí.

He limpiado y he puesto en orden el interior y he quitado toda mi propia materia personal.
