Iguazú

Some people I know quite well are currently in Brazil.  Over the past few days they visited Iguazu, famous for its waterfalls.  It is on the border between Brazil and Argentina and a wonderful experience from both sides.  Their visit has brought memories flooding back to me.  I have had the privilege of visiting there twice, once in 1973 when we lived in the Argentinian province of Misiones which is on the Argentinian side of Iguazu and also again when my sons and I visited Argentina in 1999.

It is a place where you see the splendour of God's creation in all its glory with plants, animals, birds and the natural beauty of creation - a slice of paradise on earth.  My memories also went to the other extreme as I remembered the people that we worked amongst all those years ago in the shanty towns amid such abject poverty.  They seemed like an underclass, untouchables, the forgotten ones left to fend for themselves in a world that to them was bereft of hope.  What a contrast between God's original creation and what we humans have done with it and each other!

Life in a shanty town.

They say that because of climate change and the effects of human activity and exploitation of natural resources, there isn't as much water in the waterfalls as there was fifty years ago.  When will we wake up and realise just what we are doing to our beautiful planet?  I am reminded of the words of the last few lines of a song by Queen:

Is this the world we created, we made it on our own
Is this the world we devastated, right to the bone
If there's a God in the sky looking down
What can he think of what we've done
To the world that He created?

Excessive consumerism, wasteful ways and thoughtlessness have brought such destruction.  There is a challenge for each of us to find the right balance between our wants and our needs and manage our natural resources in a more responsible way to ensure that God’s will shall be ‘done on earth as it is in Heaven’.

Superlatives

Walking through town I was aware that everyone seems to be thinking in superlatives.  They advertise their wares as 'best value', 'more versatile', 'richest flavour' or cheapest, claiming that if you can pay less elsewhere, they will give you money back.

In the news this week, we heard of James Cameron who made that incredible dive to the planet’s deepest point of the ocean in the Mariana Trench.  An incredible feat indeed.  Mountaineer Kenton Cool also spoke of his intended journey to climb the highest point on Earth, Mount Everest, for the 10th time.  He left on Thursday for this epic undertaking.  You also hear of sports men and women training for the Olympics, hoping to break another record.

It all reminded me of the words of the Psalmist when he said, ‘If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there.  If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea, even there your hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast.’ (Psalm 139:8-10) We can, through human effort achieve much but even our best cannot compare with God.

Godfrey Birtill

I love the Godfrey Birtill song that says, ‘No-one is greater, no wisdom wiser, no power is mightier than You.  No love is lovelier, no kindness kinder, no calling higher, than You.  What a God of superlatives!

Superlativos

A Good Few Days

On Thursday, my sister and I travelled to Dorchester to meet a cousin whom we hadn't seen for over 50 years and an aunty whom (apparently) I had seen once but don't remember and my sister had never met.  The bus journey was over an hour and the mixture of emotions was a bit like going to meet the in-laws for the first time!  As neither of us could remember them, we didn't quite know what to expect.  My uncle (Dad's youngest brother) had married and moved down to Dorset probably before I was born or at least not long afterwards.  As in those days there were no motorways and few people had cars, we seldom saw him or his family.  So it was uncanny to see this man waiting at the appointed rendezvous who looked uncannily like my Uncle Frank as I remembered him.  His son looked just like him.

We had a lovely time together, went out for lunch, looked at old photographs and listened to my auntie’s anecdotes bringing our family history to life.  I'm sure we will see each other quite often from now on.

The next day, Friday, my son had an interview for a night shift job in the warehouse of the local Dairy Crest.  He said the interview seemed to go ok.  They did mention, however that they would preferably like someone who had a full driving licence for a car (which he doesn't) but that it wasn't essential.  They also mentioned that there were 52 people they had to interview for the one job!  So we are not holding our breath on this one.

When I was in Latvia last year I came back determined to grow more of our own food.  We already had fruit bushes and trees but I was keen to grow some green peppers.  When I realised that I could no longer do a lot of the gardening that I had done before I was a bit discouraged and disappointed but then thought that as we have a big garden with a rather large patio area, I could easily grow things in pots.  Surely that wouldn't be too stressful.  So earlier in the week I went to the garden centre near our home and ordered some bags of compost which they delivered free and on Saturday I put some seeds into small pots before repotting them later when they have grown a bit and putting outside on the patio.  Over the winter I had dried out the seeds from a couple of green peppers (thanks Jo in Latvia for telling me how to do it!) and so I planted pepper, tomato and cucumber seeds.

Today (Sunday) Diego and I had a day out with South West Coaches.  The day entailed the morning at Dart Farm.  I was expecting to see a working farm with animals etc. as many farms now-a-days open up to the public to see how they work.  However, it turned out to be a farmers’ market!  Not quite the same … … but we did have a nice coffee and homemade cake.  The afternoon was spent in Exeter, where we had a lovely dinner of roast salmon with vegetables in a lovely café just outside of the cathedral.  The weather was like a summer’s day, everyone going round without coats and some with shorts on.

I have had a very pleasant few days. Thank you Lord!

¡Asique no estamos esperando demasiado!

He pasado unos días muy agradables.  ¡Gracias Señor!

One Way or Another

Lately we have been aware of much discussion over the rights of Christians to wear a cross at work and also for a particular council to pray before a council meeting.  There have been arguments both for and against.  I do not intend to discuss those matters here as they have already been talked about at length and I'm sure we all have our own point of view.  It seems at times that the Church is being targeted from all sides, whether it be about being open about our faith as in the cases above or about our stance on things like abortion, and same sex marriage.

I have been watching a programme lately about doing up the house of someone who has worked for some deserving cause without thinking about themselves.  In one of these programmes, one young girl wanted to help decorate a lady's house as in her words 'she introduced me to church and bought me my first Bible and for that I'll always be grateful'.  The presenter of that programme on another occasion when they were having difficulties getting a hot tub in situ and when it was safely put in place, clasped her hands together and looking upwards saying, 'Thank you Lord'.

This morning on the news about the footballer Fabrice Muamba who suffered cardiac arrest on Saturday on the pitch while the game was in progress, they showed that over the weekend many had shown their support for him in various ways as he lies in intensive care .  One footballer had the words 'Pray for Muamba' on his football shirt.

Today Catherine, wife of prince William wore a cross when on an official engagement!  I wonder if she will be told that she can’t wear it when she’s working?

I thought that was all very interesting.  There are those who try to eliminate talk of Christianity and try to pass laws to stop Christians from living out their faith in the way that they feel they should.  But GOD WILL NOT BE SILENCED!  He will find ways of letting His name be heard and bringing people's attention to Him and often does it in the most unconventional and unexpected ways!  What a great God!

The Kestrel

The natural world teaches us many lessons.  The Kestrel, a bird of prey teaches us one very important truth.  It has always been a well-known country bird living well from open fields where food is easily available.  But a number of years ago there was a dramatic change in the way humanity managed the countryside.  In order to provide more and more food for an ever growing population, farmers were encouraged to plough right up the edge of their fields.  Around the same time scientists began working on discovering and consequently manufacturing on an industrial scale, pesticides to give a more bountiful harvest.  They succeeded in protecting the crops from pests but at the same time killed off much of the other wildlife that survived in the fields.  Many birds that nested on the ground and small creatures were destroyed or at least greatly affected.

The kestrel, however, managed to survive quite well.  It’s secret for success?  Flying overhead, it realised that the verges on either side of busy motorways and railroads were not cultivated for crops and therefore were not sprayed with the deadly insecticides and pesticides.  This meant that by changing the focus of their search, they were still able to eat well and raise a family of young chicks every year.

Adaptability is the important lesson that we learn from the kestrel.  When things get difficult, it is easy to moan and grow despondent but if we can learn this important lesson, we are more able to survive.  Learning to adapt and change the way we look at things and do things can often mean that we are still able to achieve the desired goals and rise above our problems.  As St Paul puts it, ‘I have learnt to be content whatever the circumstances’. (Phil. 4:11)  Difficult?  Yes, but worth trying.

‘He aprendido a contentarme, cualquiera que sea mi situación.’ (Filipenses 4:11)  ¿Difícil?  Sí, pero vale la pena intentarlo.

The Passing of the Old

I have recently heard of a building where I used to live that is now being demolished.  This morning i saw on Facebook photos of the demolition in progress.  It is the Boy's Club and a place where many people have received excellent encouragement while growing up.  Alan Shearer (the one-time Newcastle United footballer for any who may not know who he is!) is one who comes to mind.  It's where my younger son used to go for Judo classes.  They used to hold many different activities for young boys in order to give them something positive and healthy to do and thus keep them off the streets and avoiding bad company that may lead them into bad habits.

Demolition of the Boy's Club, Wallsend

It is sad to see such photos especially when they bring such good memories to mind.  But there is a point when old things need to go in order to bring about something new.  We seem to want to keep patching up but the time comes when it is no longer possible (or desirable on occasions) to achieve this.  O how we keep wanting to hang on to something tangible of those precious memories!

Letting go is not the same as forgetting.  Let’s be clear that they are not the same thing. It is good to remember the things of the past that have been helpful but we need to be brave and take the step into something new when the time comes to leave the old.  There are times when we cannot totally commit to what is waiting in the future if we don't let go of the past.  I am so grateful for the past memories I have of helpful things, people and situations and I thank God for them.  They are things that have shaped my life and made me the person I am today but tomorrow is a new day and maybe I need to lay down some things of the past in order to fully enjoy and make the most of what the future holds.

Evolution

Yesterday my sister, nephew and his young son came to visit and stay for a bite of lunch.  In conversation it was remarked how quickly babies grow and that suddenly clothes that had plenty of room become a little tight.  Looking back at old photographs, it is interesting how people change in appearance from being small children, through adolescence and into adulthood and so the generations go on.  As children grow, it’s not only the outward appearance that changes by growing but they begin to learn and expand their minds to absorb new things every day.  On a personal level I not only changed physically and mentally but many of my attitudes and my outlook on life have changed over the years.  Life experiences have changed my thoughts and attitudes about some things.  Paul in the New Testament says that as a child he said and did things in a certain way but now as a man he sees things differently.  Over the years, we evolve on a personal level.

I have been watching the mini-series on TV lately ‘How to grow a planet’ and that scientists have come to the conclusion that all life on earth evolved from plants.  It traced planet Earth from the time when all land was just one large mass without separate continents as we know today and the rest was one massive ocean.  Then plants were formed first of all in the water and then on land and from there life of all creatures began.  Some Christians look on this sort of programme and reject them considering them to be about evolution vs christianity.  I must say that I don’t see them that way at all.

When we look at the story of creation in the Bible, the order of events that scientists tell us about is exactly as the Bible says.  For me these programmes seem to be confirming what the Bible says rather than contradicting it - each stage from the swirling formless mass that was at the beginning to the separation of sea and land.  Then the first life form was plant life, then creatures living in the water and birds and the other land creatures and humans came last.

How I differ from many scientists is that they say it happened by chance (although not all) but to me there is the amazing creative intelligence of God who was there at the start of it all and who caused it all to come into being.  Then of course there is the question about such a variation within each species.  This has earned scientists like David Attenborough a good living over many years, discovering so many different plants and creatures.  Scientists now know that animals have a form of language and that some do use tools and think and feel emotions.  The big difference I suppose is the sense of awe and worship that humans have, however primitive.  So did humans evolve from apes or just within the human species?  Will we ever really know?  If God is behind it all and made it happen, does it really matter how it happened?  I am just in awe of God and His evolving creation I see all around me.  What an amazing God and what a wonderful world!

Hidden

We have had some pleasant sunny days this past week in the southwest of England so this morning I went out into the garden to see the state of things after the bad weather we had earlier during the winter.  Some things I can still manage to do in the garden - things that don't need much strength and the other things I leave for the gardener - a very nice man who comes twice a month to help me with the heavy things I can no longer do.

Looking around this morning I was pleasantly surprised by something I hadn't noticed before.  There is a bush that has lovely variegated green leaves.  But what I saw this morning that I hadn't noticed before was a different colour that caught my eye.  When I looked more closely I saw a bunch of lovely red berries, partly hidden by the leaves.  It brought a smile to my face.

I like it when God catches our eye with the unexpected.  And how often does He use the hidden things rather than the big and showy things.  We tend to look to the big congregations, the well-known preacher or worship leader when often God wants to catch our attention with the hidden and unexpected.  He is not necessarily in the wind or the fire or the showy and spectacular but in the still small voice.  Expect to find God in the hidden, seemingly insignificant place today.

Escondido

Me hizo sonreír.
