Superlatives

Walking through town I was aware that everyone seems to be thinking in superlatives.  They advertise their wares as 'best value', 'more versatile', 'richest flavour' or cheapest, claiming that if you can pay less elsewhere, they will give you money back.

In the news this week, we heard of James Cameron who made that incredible dive to the planet’s deepest point of the ocean in the Mariana Trench.  An incredible feat indeed.  Mountaineer Kenton Cool also spoke of his intended journey to climb the highest point on Earth, Mount Everest, for the 10th time.  He left on Thursday for this epic undertaking.  You also hear of sports men and women training for the Olympics, hoping to break another record.

It all reminded me of the words of the Psalmist when he said, ‘If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there.  If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea, even there your hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast.’ (Psalm 139:8-10) We can, through human effort achieve much but even our best cannot compare with God.

Godfrey Birtill

I love the Godfrey Birtill song that says, ‘No-one is greater, no wisdom wiser, no power is mightier than You.  No love is lovelier, no kindness kinder, no calling higher, than You.  What a God of superlatives!
