Mushroom that eats plastic

A little while ago a facebook friend mentioned about an amazonian mushroom that can eat non-biodegradable plastic. My first reaction was 'Wow! that's great' but then I began to wonder - if the mushroom was in the rain forest, how do scientists know that it can eat plastic? Is there any such plastic lying around in the rain forest? I looked on websites that tell you about hoax rumours etc but didn't find anything there. I kept thinking about it so decided to browse around and try to find out more.

There are two websites in particular that clarify the situation. They are, gizmodo.com/5880768/amazonian-mushroom-eats-indestructible-plastics and herbeyclopedia.com/index.php?option=com_zoo&task=item&item_id=3. The mushroom is called Pestalotiopsis Microspora. It was discovered in the Ecuadorian Rain Forest but apparently lives in various parts of the world. Some students from Yale university in the US took samples back to their lab and began doing experiments and that is how they discovered that it actually consumes polyurethane, the plastic that has become such a problem in the world as it takes hundreds of years to destroy it. This surely seems to be the solution the world has been waiting for. What good news if there is a mushroom that can devour the plastic waste that we so freely disgard.

This table gives a good idea of how many different uses polyurethane has just in the US
(this data is taken from 2004; its use seems to increase by 5% every year

This special mushroom can live in air or without it. So it can be used to clean the oceans of all the plastic that is polluting so much of our planet. It's ideal condition for growth would seem to be at the bottom of landfill sites, among all the plastic and without sunlight or air! The other benefit from this mushroom is that it produces taxol and that is already used in the treatment of cancer. It seems almost too good to be true. And that is the problem. What if it cannot be controlled? What if it somehow spreads out from underneath the rubbish heaps or moves from the ocean to the land? As the table above shows we use polyurethane in so much of our daily living - insulation, synethetic fibres, plastic for electronics and sealants etc - what if it began to invade our homes? It sounds like something from a sci-fi horror movie: 'The invasion of the gadget-eating fungus' It seems like the solution to one problem creates another. Maybe the best thing is to just drastically reduce the amount of non-biodegradable plastic that we use and throw away so easily.

Recycling

Today on the way to visit my sister, the bus had to stop for what seemed ages because there wasn't enough room in the narrow street to pass the lorry that was collecting and emptying the recycling bins.  The bus driver was very patient but not all the car drivers were.  Yesterday they collected the recycling in our area and I noticed that some were absolutely soaked because of the very heavy rain that we had.  Earlier in the week we had more storms and hailstones.  Yet these poor men were still out in all weathers collecting our rubbish.  We so often just expect things like our rubbish to be collected but give little thought for those people who have to work outside regardless of bad weather and we so quickly moan at the slightest inconvenience.

We know that the planet is suffering because we humans have lived thoughtlessly giving little regard for others or the natural resources.  It is a good thing that at least as a nation we are now recycling much of our waste - paper, cardboard, tins, glass bottles and jars, plastic bottles and waste food.  If that means that occasionally we arrive a few minutes late because of the lorries then the inconvenience is a small price to pay for helping to save the planet.

Reciclando

What a Difference

The following photographs were taken only hours apart.  The first ones are of the sudden hailstorm that we had yesterday at around 4 pm.  I heard something lashing against the window and when I looked I saw enormous hailstones and the ground was covered.  This together with thunder and lightning was quite out of season.  Then at 9 am this morning the same place was flooded in beautiful spring sunshine while only a couple of hours later the clouds began to gather threatening rain.  In the end it didn't rain but it was quite windy and very cold.  There is truth in the saying 'what a difference a day makes!'.

Only about three weeks before we were basking in summer temperatures and yet here over the past two days we have had extreme cold and strong winds but also sunshine.  No wonder we Brits are always talking about the weather!  But such a difference in such a short time.  That about sums up life, I guess.

Mixed Emotions

I received the online statement from my energy supplier.  The electricity direct debit would remain the same as I was in credit.  However the gas payment was to be increased.  My first reaction was something else going up in price.  But then I noticed that I was a huge amount in credit and that according to their forecast of what I would probably use over the coming year I would still be in credit without increasing my monthly payment.  So I decided to send them a nice email asking for an explanation.

Yesterday I received a phone call to 'explain' and when I pointed out that I would still be in credit and that I didn't mind paying for what I was using but didn't see why I should pay for more than I would use.  In the end they left the payment without the increase and also found me a cheaper tariff.  Yeah!

I was in a happy mood for the rest of the day until the evening when I received the very sad news of a dear nephew living in Argentina who died suddenly yesterday.  I remembered when we lived there and summer holidays were always spent at the home of my parents-in-law and all the cousins played together.  Such happy times.  In recent years we have been able to visit them all again and share in memories and enjoy time together with their children and grandchildren.  Last year I became aware of his condition similar to that of my late husband but this sudden news of his death was still very upsetting.

Nephews, Pablo (left) and Esteban (right)

This morning I awoke early (5.30am) still thinking about Esteban my nephew.  I heard a blackbird singing and opened the window to enjoy it more.  It was pouring with rain but above the rain I could hear the loud song of the blackbird singing his heart out and heralding a new day.  The words of the old hymn came to my mind,

The storms may roar without me, my heart may low be laid,

But Thou art round about me, and shall I be dismayed?

Thank you Lord for your continuous presence.

Emociones Mezcladas

Papal Prophecy!

This week my attention has been taken by a blog by two of my Facebook friends.  I just can't stop thinking about it.  It is an article about something that the Pope said.  Normally I wouldn't take much interest in what the head of the Roman church has to say but this was unexpected and reflects what many modern day prophets have been saying for some time.  You can find the full transcription of what he says on http://lifeondoverbeach.wordpress.com/2012/04/09/benedict-xvi-the-church-will-become-small/.

Here is an extract of some of what he said, talking about the church:

She will no longer be able to inhabit many of the edifices she built in prosperity.

But when the trial of this sifting is past, a great power will flow from a more spiritualized and simplified Church.

And so it seems certain to me that the Church is facing very hard times. The real crisis has scarcely begun. We will have to count on terrific upheavals. But I am equally certain about what will remain at the end: not the Church of the political cult, which is dead already, but the Church of faith. She may well no longer be the dominant social power to the extent that she was until recently; but she will enjoy a fresh blossoming and be seen as man’s home, where he will find life and hope beyond death.

Two books that I have helpful over the past few years are Revolution by George Barna where he talks about how millions of Christians have opted to leave the organised form of church and have stopped meeting in buildings .  For them it has become more of a way of living than an attendance at 'Sunday Worship'.  The other book is Jesus has left the building where Paul Vieira tells his own story of how he came to leave the ministry he had within the organised church and leave the congregation altogether in order to do what God was asking of him.

There are many others who have done the same, not because they are turning their backs on God but just the opposite.  They have questioned what the church as people understand it, is actually doing to change the world and make a difference to the problems of hunger, poverty and justice.  In the New Testament the followers of Jesus were known as People of The Way.  Jesus called himself the Way.  Each one of us must follow what we feel God is saying to us as an individual.  But one thing seems clear - God is reclaiming His church and making it what He meant it to be without all the ties of politics, social acceptance and hierarchy within the organisation.  He wants us to follow Him and be loyal to Him rather than to a religious system.

One final point that struck me about this article is that I didn't expect to hear that the Pope had said that.  As an evangelical Christian it would be more usual to hear such words from a great evangelist or the latest senational speaker that graces the platforms of some free churches.  But God uses whom He chooses and we can hear His voice in unexpected places and from people we would least expect.

Some people I know quite well are currently in Brazil.  Over the past few days they visited Iguazu, famous for its waterfalls.  It is on the border between Brazil and Argentina and a wonderful experience from both sides.  Their visit has brought memories flooding back to me.  I have had the privilege of visiting there twice, once in 1973 when we lived in the Argentinian province of Misiones which is on the Argentinian side of Iguazu and also again when my sons and I visited Argentina in 1999.

It is a place where you see the splendour of God's creation in all its glory with plants, animals, birds and the natural beauty of creation - a slice of paradise on earth.  My memories also went to the other extreme as I remembered the people that we worked amongst all those years ago in the shanty towns amid such abject poverty.  They seemed like an underclass, untouchables, the forgotten ones left to fend for themselves in a world that to them was bereft of hope.  What a contrast between God's original creation and what we humans have done with it and each other!

Life in a shanty town.

They say that because of climate change and the effects of human activity and exploitation of natural resources, there isn't as much water in the waterfalls as there was fifty years ago.  When will we wake up and realise just what we are doing to our beautiful planet?  I am reminded of the words of the last few lines of a song by Queen:

Is this the world we created, we made it on our own
Is this the world we devastated, right to the bone
If there's a God in the sky looking down
What can he think of what we've done
To the world that He created?

Excessive consumerism, wasteful ways and thoughtlessness have brought such destruction.  There is a challenge for each of us to find the right balance between our wants and our needs and manage our natural resources in a more responsible way to ensure that God’s will shall be ‘done on earth as it is in Heaven’.

Superlatives

Walking through town I was aware that everyone seems to be thinking in superlatives.  They advertise their wares as 'best value', 'more versatile', 'richest flavour' or cheapest, claiming that if you can pay less elsewhere, they will give you money back.

In the news this week, we heard of James Cameron who made that incredible dive to the planet’s deepest point of the ocean in the Mariana Trench.  An incredible feat indeed.  Mountaineer Kenton Cool also spoke of his intended journey to climb the highest point on Earth, Mount Everest, for the 10th time.  He left on Thursday for this epic undertaking.  You also hear of sports men and women training for the Olympics, hoping to break another record.

It all reminded me of the words of the Psalmist when he said, ‘If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there.  If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea, even there your hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast.’ (Psalm 139:8-10) We can, through human effort achieve much but even our best cannot compare with God.

Godfrey Birtill

I love the Godfrey Birtill song that says, ‘No-one is greater, no wisdom wiser, no power is mightier than You.  No love is lovelier, no kindness kinder, no calling higher, than You.  What a God of superlatives!

Superlativos

A Good Few Days

On Thursday, my sister and I travelled to Dorchester to meet a cousin whom we hadn't seen for over 50 years and an aunty whom (apparently) I had seen once but don't remember and my sister had never met.  The bus journey was over an hour and the mixture of emotions was a bit like going to meet the in-laws for the first time!  As neither of us could remember them, we didn't quite know what to expect.  My uncle (Dad's youngest brother) had married and moved down to Dorset probably before I was born or at least not long afterwards.  As in those days there were no motorways and few people had cars, we seldom saw him or his family.  So it was uncanny to see this man waiting at the appointed rendezvous who looked uncannily like my Uncle Frank as I remembered him.  His son looked just like him.

We had a lovely time together, went out for lunch, looked at old photographs and listened to my auntie’s anecdotes bringing our family history to life.  I'm sure we will see each other quite often from now on.

The next day, Friday, my son had an interview for a night shift job in the warehouse of the local Dairy Crest.  He said the interview seemed to go ok.  They did mention, however that they would preferably like someone who had a full driving licence for a car (which he doesn't) but that it wasn't essential.  They also mentioned that there were 52 people they had to interview for the one job!  So we are not holding our breath on this one.

When I was in Latvia last year I came back determined to grow more of our own food.  We already had fruit bushes and trees but I was keen to grow some green peppers.  When I realised that I could no longer do a lot of the gardening that I had done before I was a bit discouraged and disappointed but then thought that as we have a big garden with a rather large patio area, I could easily grow things in pots.  Surely that wouldn't be too stressful.  So earlier in the week I went to the garden centre near our home and ordered some bags of compost which they delivered free and on Saturday I put some seeds into small pots before repotting them later when they have grown a bit and putting outside on the patio.  Over the winter I had dried out the seeds from a couple of green peppers (thanks Jo in Latvia for telling me how to do it!) and so I planted pepper, tomato and cucumber seeds.

Today (Sunday) Diego and I had a day out with South West Coaches.  The day entailed the morning at Dart Farm.  I was expecting to see a working farm with animals etc. as many farms now-a-days open up to the public to see how they work.  However, it turned out to be a farmers’ market!  Not quite the same … … but we did have a nice coffee and homemade cake.  The afternoon was spent in Exeter, where we had a lovely dinner of roast salmon with vegetables in a lovely café just outside of the cathedral.  The weather was like a summer’s day, everyone going round without coats and some with shorts on.

I have had a very pleasant few days. Thank you Lord!

¡Asique no estamos esperando demasiado!

He pasado unos días muy agradables.  ¡Gracias Señor!

One Way or Another

Lately we have been aware of much discussion over the rights of Christians to wear a cross at work and also for a particular council to pray before a council meeting.  There have been arguments both for and against.  I do not intend to discuss those matters here as they have already been talked about at length and I'm sure we all have our own point of view.  It seems at times that the Church is being targeted from all sides, whether it be about being open about our faith as in the cases above or about our stance on things like abortion, and same sex marriage.

I have been watching a programme lately about doing up the house of someone who has worked for some deserving cause without thinking about themselves.  In one of these programmes, one young girl wanted to help decorate a lady's house as in her words 'she introduced me to church and bought me my first Bible and for that I'll always be grateful'.  The presenter of that programme on another occasion when they were having difficulties getting a hot tub in situ and when it was safely put in place, clasped her hands together and looking upwards saying, 'Thank you Lord'.

This morning on the news about the footballer Fabrice Muamba who suffered cardiac arrest on Saturday on the pitch while the game was in progress, they showed that over the weekend many had shown their support for him in various ways as he lies in intensive care .  One footballer had the words 'Pray for Muamba' on his football shirt.

Today Catherine, wife of prince William wore a cross when on an official engagement!  I wonder if she will be told that she can’t wear it when she’s working?

I thought that was all very interesting.  There are those who try to eliminate talk of Christianity and try to pass laws to stop Christians from living out their faith in the way that they feel they should.  But GOD WILL NOT BE SILENCED!  He will find ways of letting His name be heard and bringing people's attention to Him and often does it in the most unconventional and unexpected ways!  What a great God!
