Money, money, money

There is much talk in the media about the threat of a double dip in the economy.  They say that house prices are on the up again but that more and more businesses are closing their doors, as they can’t keep going any more.
I received an email this week saying of the things that money can and can’t buy.  It reminded me of the Abba song ‘Money, money, money’.

You can buy a house but not a home

You can buy a clock but not time

You can buy a bed but not sleep

You can buy a book but not knowledge

And I thought of the Beatles’ song that says, ‘You can buy me a diamond ring my friend, if it makes you feel alright, … … can’t buy me love … …’

When we stop to think, I’m sure there are many other examples that we could come up with.  It seems that money can’t buy the things that are more worthwhile in life – the things that are most important to a fulfilling and happy life.  So why is it that humanity is so concerned about making more and more of it – to the detriment of resources, people and the planet in the process?

Thought you might like this quote:-

In 1968, Senator Robert Kennedy was running for president and he said:-.

" Gross Domestic Product does not allow for the health of our children,
the quality of their education,
or the joy of their play.
It does not include
the beauty of our poetry
or the strength of our marriages,
the intelligence of our public debate,
or the integrity of our public officials.
It measures everything,
in short,
except that which makes life worthwhile,
and it can tell us everything about America,
except why we are proud that we are Americans."

What a great quote, Joanna. I love it. It's exactly what I was trying to say. Thanks.
