Why classical music?

I am awakened in a morning to the sounds of Radio 2. I lie for a couple of minutes to listen to 'Pause for Thought' This is always followed by some droning, quiet classical music. Don't get me wrong - I like classical music - but why do we connect subdued music with anything faintly religious? It seems again that we have confined anything relating to God in a particular box that suggests to most people something boring and from the past. I would love to hear such comments followed by Bono, Cliff Richard or Hillsong. This would at least make the thoughts seem relevant to today.
